1. Extension vs. Renewal: Which One Do You Need?

In 2026, “Extension” and “Renewal” have different technical meanings in Vietnam:

A. Visa Extension (Stay Extension)

  • What it is: Extending your current permission to stay without a new visa sticker.

  • Best for: New Zealanders on Business (DN) or Work (LĐ) visas who have a sponsoring company in Vietnam.

  • Note: As of May 2026, standard 90-day E-visas are generally non-extendable while inside the country.

B. Visa Renewal (Visa Run)

  • What it is: Exiting Vietnam and re-entering to get a brand new visa (usually a 90-day E-visa).

  • Best for: Tourists, digital nomads, and those on E-visas.

  • Popular Routes: Moc Bai (Cambodia land border) or a quick flight to Bangkok/Kuala Lumpur.

2. Crucial 2026 Rules: Decree 282/2025 Penalties

Vietnam is no longer lenient with “accidental” overstays. Under the new 2026 regulations:

  • 1–15 Days Overstay: Fines from 500,000 to 2,000,000 VND and a formal warning.

  • 16+ Days Overstay: Fines up to 10,000,000 VND and a mandatory deportation review.

  • 90+ Days Overstay: Fines up to 40,000,000 VND, forced deportation, and a long-term entry ban (Blacklist).

To avoid these, you must start your extension or renewal process at least 7–10 days before your current visa expires.

3. The “Visa Run” Process for New Zealanders

Since E-visas cannot be extended internally, most Kiwis choose the “Visa Run” method:

  1. Apply for a new E-visa online (3–5 working days).

  2. Travel to a border (e.g., Moc Bai Border or Tan Son Nhat Airport).

  3. Exit Vietnam and get an exit stamp.

  4. Re-enter immediately using your new E-visa.

Mandatory 2026 Requirement: Don’t forget that for every new entry, you must complete the Digital Arrival Card and receive a new QR code within 72 hours of re-entering.

4. Requirements for Extension (Business/Work)

If you have a sponsor, you will need:

  • Original Passport (valid for 6+ months).

  • Form NA5 (signed and sealed by your sponsoring company).

  • Original Work Permit (if applying for an LĐ visa extension).

  • Proof of temporary residence registration with the local police.
