How to Extend Vietnam Visa for New Zealand Citizens
As of November 2023, New Zealand citizens cannot extend their Vietnam e-visa. If you need to stay in Vietnam for longer than your e-visa allows, you must leave Vietnam and re-enter with a new e-visa.
Future changes:
The Vietnamese government is considering allowing visitors from certain countries, including New Zealand, to extend their e-visas. However, there is no timeline for when this change will take effect.
What to do if you need to stay in Vietnam for longer than your e-visa allows:
If you need to stay in Vietnam for longer than your e-visa allows, you must leave Vietnam and re-enter with a new e-visa. You can apply for a new e-visa online at the official Vietnam e-visa website.
Tips for extending your Vietnam e-visa:
- Apply for a new e-visa at least 30 days before your current e-visa expires.
- Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months after your intended date of departure from Vietnam.
- Have a valid return or onward ticket.
- Pay the visa fee.
Once you have applied for a new e-visa, you will receive an e-visa approval letter by email. Print out this letter and carry it with you when you travel to Vietnam.
When you arrive at Vietnam immigration, present your e-visa approval letter and your passport to the immigration officer. You will then be issued with a visa stamp in your passport.
Please note that the Vietnamese government may change its visa policies at any time. It is always best to check with the Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your home country for the latest information.

I have a new New Zealand passport (LT004798) in my old passport (LH751335) I had a Certificate of Visa exemption (AR0773554 because i’m married to a Vietnamese woman ( Huyen Tran) its not in my new passport Can I get an extension? If not what forms do I need to fill out? I’m in Queensland Australia now. Regards, Eric Woodcock
Dear Eric Woodcock
In this case, you should contact the Vietnamese Embassy in Sydney or Canberra to change from old passport to new passport and make an extension for you.
Good morning. I have already purchased a return plane ticket for travel from New Zealand to Vietnam arriving on the 14th of August 2023 and departing Vietnam on the 4th of November 2023.Both flights are from Ho Chi Minh City International Airport. The purpose of my visit is as a tourist.
As I have visited Vietnam many times before I am familiar with the e-visa process and made the mistaken assumption that I could do the same for a three month visa and only now realised that this now requires me to apply for a visa extension through the Vietnamese Embassy prior to my departure which I am happy to do. My question is does the three month extension{ which would cover the period of my visit]still require me to get the one month e-visa before applying for the three month extension? Regards Billy
Hi,
I applied for a multi-entry E-Visa through the official website for my travel dates (27.01.2024 – 05.03.2024) and they have approved my visa but it is only approved until 04.03.2024 – it is ONE day short. I have already booked a flight to Laos via Hanoi for the 5th that I cannot change. Is there any way to fix this? I’m sure when I applied for my visa I added a week on to my ‘exit’ date for security as well… It was my understanding that when you get a Multi-Entry E-Visa you automatically get 90 days..??
Please advise :0
